It's official: women are better at parking

Originally from The Daily Telegraph, this was published in today's The Times.

It is a cliche almost as old as the motor car itself, and the subject of many a sexist joke, but the idea that women cannot park is simply untrue, according to UK researchers.
Covert surveillance of car parks across Britain has shown that though women may take longer to park, they are more likely to leave their vehicles in the middle of the bay.
The study is one of the most comprehensive conducted on gender driving differences, and took into account seven key components.
Women were found to be better at finding spaces, more accurate in lining vehicles up before starting each manoeuvre, and more likely to adopt instructors' preferred method of reversing into bays.
Men were shown to be more skilled at driving forwards into spaces and more confident overall, with fewer opting to reposition their car once in a bay.
But once all the elements were taken into account, women were ranked first with a total score of 13.4 out of 20, compared with 12.3 points achieved by men.
Neil Beeson, a professional driving instructor who devised the experiment, described the results as "surprising".
"In my experience, men have always been the best learners and usually performed better in lessons," he said. "However, it's possible that women have retained the information better. It shows that we men need to give our partners more respect when it comes to parking. The facts don't lie."
But James May, the Top Gear presenter, challenged the criteria of the study, saying that parking in the centre of a bay was not always the best policy, especially if a neighbouring car was parked too close to the dividing lines.
"I don't care what gender the person is next to me, I just don't want them to bang their door on my Porsche."

Tuesday Tunes: Taylor Swift covering 'White Blank Page' (Mumford and Sons)

I'm quite the fan of both country and folk music. Mumford and Sons managed to make folk mainstream last year, and really are a quality band. Their original version of 'White Blank Page' can't be matched, but I don't think Taylor does a terrible job at covering it. This is the live version that she did of the song for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge in April 2011. Love it, hate it, whatever.

2. Turn your eyes toward the wall/roof or somewhere else on a plain surface
3. Keep blinking your eyes quickly!
4. Let me know what you can see?

Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there

Swan Lake and then some...

Swan Lake is one of the most beautiful classic ballets with a gorgeous score composed by Tchaikovsky. Originally Russian, it has been danced since the late 1800s. The video below takes the traditional choreography and ups it a few levels (to say the least). I am unsure of what company is dancing, but it is just breathtaking!

Today I'm Doing

Today I'm shooting a commercial for the USA, and we're replicating this line-dancing scene from the new Footloose movie. Haven't seen the remake yet (*sobs* someone please volunteer to come with me!) but I do have the original on DVD.

Fun fun!

The London Diaries

Hey all you MCB followers

London Diary: Entry One

So I can no longer call myself a Mother City Blonde any more...sob sob. I’m now a London Jetsetter. I’ve been set free into the big bad working world, no more watching the time go by on Jammie, chilling on Clifton 4th beach or cruising the local Long street drinking holes. Luckily for me I have landed in an incredible city bursting with life and energy :) – yes people do get up before noon in some parts of the world – Cape Town get your act together! Jokes aside, London is fantastic! There is so much to see and do and be a part of!

So far I’ve managed to get to a footie game, visit the National Theatre, celebrate the start of the New Year on the banks of the river Thames witnessing an array of breathtaking fireworks and settle into my new abode :) Many visits to the local grocer later we finally have a flat that resembles a place one would live in. Not without its problems though! One word: Plumber! If I never see another one of those again life will be perfect!!!

Anyway, currently typing this from Alexandria, Egypt. Yes I know this is a London Diary entry but this is what happens when you strike it lucky on the work front – they send you right back to Africa and lucky for me one does not work too hard in Africa!!

Write soon with some more exciting news :)

Keep it Blonde!

New Year Resolutions

Alright people... 3 weeks into the New Year, how are we all doing with our resolutions??

Mine for 2012 (note nothing too lofty :P )

1. Sing more  - definitely have made a concerted effort in the shower; a little bit of harmonising to the radio in the car. I don't ever plan on winning American Idol here - the point of this resolution was retrieve a bit of that childlike freedom and joy where one just shouted to the heavens with glee, just because.

2. Dance. Ok, so haven't quite phoned up the ballet teacher to ask about class times (bad Kiki) but if I think on the work I've done over the last few months / am currently doing I rate I'm getting a big tick here. Shooting a Footloose inspired linedancing scene tomorrow for a commercial 'Howdy!'.

3. Drink More Water. Not drinking enough water (and possibly maybe drinking too much naughty water) is my worst health habit.... trying to carry a water bottle everywhere. Baby steps, baby steps.

Hope y'all haven't been overwhelmed by 2012!

If life was a song, would you spend most of it worrying about how it ended?

If life was a song, would there be meaning in the sound?

If life was a song, would you, please, sing it with me?

A ballet dancer goes onstage on a given night, in a specific theatre, in a specific ballet and executes, in a specific fraction of musical time a movement that is already past just as it appears. And it takes far more than 10,000 hours of practice and repetition to0 make this movement exquisite, worthy. A dancer's entire career consists of these moments of non-existence; they are not even fleeting, they are, somehow, never there at all, a shadow in someone else's mind at best. -  TONI BENTLEY

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN - ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

A little bit of magic for Friday 13th

I like Friday the 13th. I was born on Friday 13th (of May, cough, start planning ridiculously awesome presents). Friday 13ths tend to work out well for me. Last year I had the most delightful brunch at Tashas Constantia with the besties making me feel all Sex and the Cityish - "Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with", and the next day (after much wine tasting in Stellenbosch) I got to watch the UCT Ikey Tigers win Intervarsity during which I bumped into a boy, whom has been lots of fun and then some. Go figure. Oh the magic of the 13th. And before you tell me that only half that stuff happened on the actual 13th, pft. It's a weekend of Friday 13thness *obviously*. It's akin to 4th of July weekend, it's a whole weekend of magical possibilities.

So in light of the potential magic this weekend possesses, here's a bit of magic for you... Magic Mike that is.

Steven Soderbergh could potentially become my favourite person later this year when his latest film gets released. In short: it's about hot, male strippers. A few little teaser pictures have been released, and you will understand after oggling them why this is at the top of the Girls Night Out Movie Endevour List.

The cast list reads like a hottest list: Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer and Adam Rodriguez. *swoons and dies in happiness*

Bottomline: Abs, lots of abs.

Piano Sheet Music

Best find of the last month! http://www.pianofiles.com

A website allowing people to share sheet music. Lovely stuff indeed. One makes a profile, lists sheet music one is willing to trade and the searching and sharing begins :)

Thanks to a sweet Polish boy I now can pretend I'm Missy Higgins doing this. Just not as well. Yet.

Tinkle away!!
All men fear death. It's a natural fear that consumes us all. We fear death because we feel that we haven't loved well enough or loved at all, which ultimately are one and the same. However, when you make love with a truly great woman, one that deserves the utmost respect in this world and one that makes you feel truly powerful, that fear of death completely disappears. Because when you are sharing your body and heart with a great woman the world fades away. You two are the only ones in the entire universe. You conquer what most lesser men have never conquered before, you have conquered a great woman's heart, the most vulnerable thing she can offer to another. Death no longer lingers in the mind. Fear no longer clouds your heart. Only passion for living, and for loving, become your sole reality. This is no easy task for it takes insurmountable courage. But remember this, for that moment when you are making love with a woman of true greatness you will feel immortal. - Hemingway in 'Midnight in Paris'

You ever look at a picture of yourself, and see a stranger in the background? It makes you wonder how many strangers have pictures of you. How many moments of other people's lives have we been in? Were we a part of someone's life when their dream came true or were we there when their dream died? Did we keep trying to get in? As if we were somehow destined to be there or did the shot take us by surprise? Just think, you could be a big part of someone else's life, and not even know it.LUCAS SCOTT, ONE TREE HILL

Tuesday Tunes: 'Starlight' - Muse

I love it when I'm reminded of a great tune; and this one rocks.

Recently watched Crazy Stupid Love (with some crazy stupid boys, and yes I loved the movie). Muse's 'Starlight' is used in the trailer and it's just an epic tune.

....Our hopes and expectations...
...I just wanted to hold you in my arms...
...You electrify my life...

Mini Cape Town Video

Timmy Henny's short film, Mini Cape, has been selected as a finalist at the San Francisco International Festival of Short Films. Inspired by Sam O'Hare's The Sandpit, Timmy directed and filmed Mini Cape in 2011, shooting from rooftops and balconies all over the Mother City. The 2-minute film is subtitled "A mini day in the life of Cape Town City". The above video is the slightly longer extended version :)

Happy Birthday Kate!

Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge (and commoner who married a prince *sigh*) turns 30 today!

Since transitioning from 'Waity Katie' to William's wife, the former Miss Middleton has become a press darling and fashion icon. The Blondes drank bubbly and ate chocolate whilst she waltzed down the isle and into the royal family in her princess Alexander McQueen wedding gown, and since then she has made all sorts of appearances in all sorts of delightful outfits.

And in case you thought that dressing pretty was all she did with her days *lies*. Just this week Kate announced her chosen charities for which she will provide patronage - the combination reflecting her love of the arts, sports and wish to work with children. And on top of that, she's also become a scout leader!

Elle: You're breaking up with me because I'm too... blonde?
Warner Huntington III: Well, no. That's not entirely true...
Elle: Then what? My boobs are too big?

"I've been thinking a lot lately about taking chances, and how it's really just about overcoming your fears. Because the truth is, every time you take a big risk in your life, no matter how it ends up, you're always glad you took it." - Zach Braff, Scrubs

"Adventure is worthwhile in itself" - Amelia Earhart

‎"Dancing is an art that imprints on the soul. It is with you every moment, even after you give it up. It is with you every moment of your day and night. It is an art that expresses itself in how you walk, how you eat, how you make love, and how you do nothing. It is the art of the body, and as long as a dancer posseses a body, he or she feels the call of expressions in dancer's terms." ~ Shirley Maclaine

A little teaser...

Last month I got to be part of an awesome project shot with a Phantom Camera (you know that super slow-mo vibe at the cricket?? That.)

Whilst the video is still being edited, here are a few sneaky screengrabs from the day...

Things That Scare Me

1. That someone might take my towel while I'm in the shower at gym.
2. The Spice Girls were in my dream the other night (possibly with Westlife or Boyzone) - what does that mean??!
3. Cockroaches
4. Clowns - they're so sad; why are people laughing at them?
5. Maybe the hokey pokey is what it's all about?

You're in a car with a beautiful boy, and he won't tell you that he loves you, but he loves you. And you feel like you've done something terrible, like robbed a liquor store, or swallowed pills, or shoveled yourself a grave in the dirt, and you're tired. You're in a car with a beautiful boy, and you're trying not to tell him that you love him, and you're trying to choke down the feeling, and you're trembling, but he reaches over and he touches you, like a prayer for which no words exist, and you feel your heart taking root in your body, like you've discovered something you didn't even have a name for.RICHARD SIKEN

Tuesday Tunes: Alanis Morissette 'Head Over Feet'

Isn't it ironic (see what I did there?) to start a new year off with an old school song? Seems like a delightful thing to do when it's a great lyrical one. 'Head Over Feet' was written by Alanis Morissette and Glen Ballard and produced by Ballard for Morrissette's third album, 'Jagged Little Pill' recorded back in 1996.

If you're into composition, it has an interesting harmonic structure for the rock genre with the verses in C Major and the choruses modulating to D Major. But it was cool honest lyrics that got me:

I had no choice but to hear you
You stated your case time and again
I thought about it

You treat me like I'm a princess
I'm not used to liking that
You ask how my day was

Chorus:
You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
And don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole
You're so much braver than I gave you credit for
That's not lip service

Repeat Chorus

You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
Thanks for your patience

You're the best listener that I've ever met
You're my best friend
Best friend with benefits
What took me so long

I've never felt this healthy before
I've never wanted something rational
I am aware now
I am aware now

Repeat Chorus x2

Monday, January 2, 2012

May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art - write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself. - Neil Gaiman

Warner Huntington III: Pooh bear, just get in the car.
Elle: No.
[starts walking away, sniffling
Warner Huntington III: You're gonna ruin your shoes.
Elle: Okay.
[gets in car
